Background

Lester was born in England in 1819, arriving in Australia in 1853 on the Lady Arabella. He was a butcher and storekeeper at Golden Point in 1853, and first dug for gold at Eureka. [1]

Alfred Lester married Mary Stockden and they had three children: Alfred, born in 1855 at Ballarat (died in April 1857); Alfred, born in 1857 at Ballarat (died on 4 July 1949 at Creswick; buried at Creswick Cemetery); and George, born in 1859 at Ballarat East. [2]

He died in 1900 in Hawthorn. [3]

Alfred Lester signed the 1853 Bendigo Goldfields Petition.

Post 1854 Experiences

Lester lived at Ballarat, and was recorded on the 1855 Electoral Roll, under the electoral qualification of Householder, and in that year signed the Benden Hassell Compensation Case Petition giving his occupation as Licensed Publican. He was listed as the owner of the Free Trade Hotel in Eureka when he he signed a petition of householders of Ballaarat requesting the establishment of a Municipality in 1855. In the 1880’s Lester was residing at Lester’s Hotel, Ballarat.[4]

At his late residence, "Ontario," Power street, Hawthorn, Alfred Lester, late of Ballarat, in his 81st year.[5]

Obituary

Alfred Lester, of Lester's Hotel, is sick, but not, I hope, onto death. He his been ill for sometime, and is still laid by.[6]
