Background

Boorondara Cemetery was established in December 1858 and was the first landscaped cemetery in Australia. The cemetery is divided into sections allocated to various religions with size of sections being determined by local population ratio gained from the 1857 Census.

When the 12.5 hectares of land was originally set aside for a cemetery it was densely covered with large red gums and wattles. At the time it was intended only for the residents of Boroondara (Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell) however it was not long before burial lots were made available to residents from all over Melbourne.

As one of the oldest cemeteries in Victoria there has been in excess of 75,000 burials, with the first burial taking place on 12 March 1859.
