In the News

Henry Mount, M.D., an old and valued resident of Ballarat, has been presented by a number of friends with a diamond ring and an address, on the eve of his departure for Europe. Dr Mount was long an honorary surgeon of the Ballarat District Hospital.[3]
On Monday afternoon several of Dr Mount's friends assembled at the George Hotel, where he was presented with a diamond ring and the following address:- "To Henry Mount, Esq., M.D. Dear Sir, - Having heard that it is your intention to visit Europe for a time, we the undersigned, being a committee of your friends and patients in Ballarat and its vicinity, cannot permit you to depart with out expressing the high esteem and regard we entertain towards you as a physician and a gentleman during your residence amongst us for a period of nine years. Your departure from this district will leave a blank which will not be easily filled. Apart from the personal regard which we have so feebly expressed, you are eminently entitled to the thanks and gratitude of the inhabitants of this district from your early and long continued connection with the District Hospital as honorary surgeon, as well as your active co operation in every movement having for its object the public good. We request that you will accept the accompanying souvenir of our friend- ship and regard, and we trust that it will occasionally remind you of friends with whom you have parted perhaps for ever. With best wishes for your future prosperity and happiness, and with kind regards to Mrs Mount, whose hospitality and kindness we have so frequently experienced, we remain, dear sir, yours faithfully, George G. Morton,. M.P., J. M. Stewart, Walter Craig, Arthur Graham, William Robertson, William Thomas Pooley." Dr Mount replied as follows:- "My Dear Friends,- I receive with feelings of sincere respect and esteem the address, and this handsome souvenir which you are so kind as to present to me. I can assure you that my residence among such devoted and sincere friends will ever be among my most cherished recollections. I fully appreciate your kind wishes; be pleased therefore to accept my heartfelt thanks for this parting token as mark of regard you are pleased to entertain for me. On behalf of Mrs Mount I beg leave to return my most respectful and sincere thanks for your kind wishes."[4]
