Obituary

SUICIDE OF AN OLD COLONIST
The medical evidence taken at the inquest held at the Morgue yesterday by District Coroner Morrison, into the death of Charles Grattan Anderson, an inmate of the Old Colonists' Home, who was found dead with a bottle of laudanum and some arsenic close by, showed that death resulted from rupture of the blood vessels of the brain, brought about by excessive vomiting, caused by a stomach irritant, such as arsenic. The verdict of the jury was in accordance with the medical evidence. Concerning the deceased, our Kilmore correspondent supplies the following particulars:— Charles C. Anderson was a very old resident of this town, and a colonist of over 00 years. He arrived at Sydney, in 1837, coming to Melbourne the following year. In 1840, he made the overland journey to Adelaide with stock, being one of the first to make the trip. Three years later he went to India, and also to his native country (Ireland), but returned to Victoria in 1850. When the Ballarat diggings broke out, he made his way there, and was present at the Eureka riots. Coming to Kilmore about 1S53, he went to Bendigo rush, but eventually returned, and settled here, where he was appointed poundkeeper, a position he held for over 40 years. In the early days lie was shipping reporter for one of the Melbourne papers, most of the reports at that time being brought from Williamstown on horseback. Deceased was 73 years of age at the time of his death. He leaves one son.[1]
