Background
Dennis Kinnane was born c1812 in the Townland of Gloves, near Killtullagh, County Galway, Ireland. He emigrated under the name Cannon with Patrick Kennedy from the same parish, in 1842 as a Bounty immigrant, on the Himalaya. They arrived in Port Phillip in February 1842. Dennis Kinnane married Margaret Guthrie at St Alipius church on the Ballarat East Diggings on 22 March 1853. The marriage is hand written the names being Daniel Cannan (he apparently was called Dinny and the broad Irish accent phonetically sounded like CANNAN) and Margaret Guttery. Patrick Smyth was the officiating priest. Theirs is the first marriage in the handwritten book held at St Patrick's church. Dennis could neither read nor write.[1]
Dennis and Margaret lived at Little Bendigo, where the old Eureka Lead was, before moving to Fellmongers, Ballarat East. Their first child, John Kinnane was born in April 1854 'on the Eureka Lead'. [2]

With Margaret Guthrie Dennis had the following issue: John born 1854 Eureka; Bridget born 1856 Ballarat; Thomas born 1858 Ballarat; Coleman born 1859 Ballarat; Peter born 1861; James born 1862; Dennis born 1864 and Patrick (deceased).
