Background

Edmund Strange arrived in Australia with his wife, four sons and three daughters, on the Shropshire in 1848. He was working as a carpenter at Geelong before becoming one of the first prospectors, alonmg with his mate John Parling, on the Ballarat field soon after gold was first discovered at Poverty Point in August 1851.[1]
