He was a native of Pennsylvania he arrived in Ballarat in 1853, and the following year was one of the participants in the Eureka Stockade riot. In the conflict he sustained a slight wound in the arm. On the 50th anniversary of the fight, held at Ballarat, Mr Hartley received the title of the 'Stockade Poet'.[1]
