Background

George Hartley was known as 'The Stockade Poet'. He was born on 16 February 1829 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America. He arrived in Australia from San Francisco in June 1853 on board The Racer.[1]

He died in 1915.

"STOCKADE POET'S" DEATH. EGERTON, Tuesday - Mr George Hartley, a veteran of the Eureka Stockade, has died at Egerton, aged 86 years. He was a native of Pennsylvania he arrived in Ballarat in 1853, and the following year was one of the participants in the Eureka Stockade riot. In the conflict he sustained a slight wound in the arm. On the 50th anniversary of the fight, held at Ballarat, Mr Hartley received the title of the 'Stockade Poet'.[2]
