Background
John Leslie Fitzgerald Vesey Foster was the second son of John Leslie Foster, A Tory member of parliament and baron of the Irish Court of Exchequer, and Letitia Vesey (nee Fitzgerald). In 1850 he married Emily Fletcher and they had a son and two daughters.[1]
Because of his long name Foster was known as Alphabetical Foster. He was privately educated and at 17 entered Trinity College, Dublin. He reeived a Bachelor of Arts in 1839, and after studying for some months, sailed for Australia. Foster arrived in Port Phillip (Melbourne) in 1841, and tool up farming in partnership with a cousin. He sold his land in 1850 and returned to Ireland where he was married. He returned to Australia as the Colonial Secretary in July 1853.
