John O'Neil

Background

John O'Neil was born in Ireland, a lineal descendant of the Royal House of O'Neill's of Tyrone. John joined the British Army in 1833 and served in India from 1834 to 1841. He was sent to Victoria in 1854 and saw service at the Eureka Stockade uprising. Discharged from the army in 1856 he settled in Portuguese Flat, Creswick, until his death in 1895. He is buried at Creswick Cemetery.[1]

Obituary

A very old and interesting resident of Creswick died to day in the per on of Mr John O’Neill, of Portuguese Flat. He had long been a familiar personage in Creswick and was 80 years of age at the lime of his death He was interesting in that he was an old soldier, and formed one of the 40th Regiment that stormed the Eureka Stockade on that memorable Sunday morning 41 years ago. He remained in the army two years after the Stockade affair, having served Her Majesty some 15 years. The old gentleman was highly esteemed in the district, and general regret is felt at his death.[2]
