Background
Michael Hanrahan was born on 01 January 1854 at Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. [1] He married Mary McAllan at St Alipius on 14 January 1862. [2]
Hanrahan died 04 January 1912, aged 86.[3]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Michael Hanrahan arrived in Ballarat on 1 January 1854. Hanrahan was chosen as Captain of the Pikemen among the diggers, and was said to be Peter Lalor’s right hand man. Hanrahan was in the Eureka Stockade on Saturday afternoon, but not at time of battle. Late on Saturday 02 December he led a group of miners to slow down the soldiers, but they came the wrong way.[4]
Post 1854 Experiences
Hanrahan sought compensation from the Government for his tent being burnt inside the Eureka Stockade. [5]
Hanrahan lived at Ballarat, and was recorded on the 1855 Electoral Roll, under the electoral qualification of Miner’s Right. He settled on the slopes of Mt Warrenheip. He moved to Bungaree and started potato farming on land which is still owned by his descendants.[6]
Obituary
- "Notice Is hereby given that after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication here of application will he made to the Supreme Court or of Victoria In its Probate jurisdiction, that PROBATE of the WILL of MARY HANRAHAN late of Bungaree, in the state of Victoria, married woman, deceased, may be granted to Thomas Hanrahan and Michael Hanrahan, both of Bungaree, in the said state, farmers, the executors named in and appointed by the said will.
- Dated this third day of March, 1908
- CUTBERT, MORROW and MUST, Ballarat proctors for the said executors.[7]
- Michael Hanrahan, sen., late of Bungaree, farmer, who died on January 4 last, by his will, dated April 13 1910 left realty £2,950 and personalty £65 to his widow and children.[8]
