Background
Father Patrick Dunne was the first Catholic priest to celebrate Mass on the Ballarat goldfields in 1851, arriving in October. He was born in 1818 at Clonaslee, Leix, Ireland. Father Dunne was ordained in 1846 at 28 years of age. He is described as experienced in missionary work, healthy, energetic and a good horseman. He was the first chaplain of Melbourne's Pentridge “stockade” and one of the first to instigate the “one to one” ratio of help, government to public, in raising money for public disasters.
Father Dunne administered the Port Fairy parish from 1853-56 and is also famous for his involvement in the Queensland Immigration Scheme. He died on 19th July 1900 and is buried at Thurgoona Cemetery, near Albury.
