Background
On 19 September 1851 the Commissioner arrived at Golden Point demanding 15 shillings for a gold licence to see out the month. The diggers thought they had not been mining for long enough to cover the cost. A digger named George Swindells jumped onto a stump with a pistol in his hand. Two men were chosen to go and talk to the Commission, but they could not change his mind.
