Joanne Simpson, a member of the Eureka Memorial Trust spoke before a Eureka Dinner on Sunday 6 June 1999.

We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other, and fight to defend our rights and liberties.

The words from this declaration heralded a fight for freedom, freedom of choice not freedom from choice.

The memory of this fight for freedom and justice has been kept alive through several generations.

We celebrate those who have not forgotten the contribution of the rebels who swore this declaration under the flag of the Southern Cross, at this lunch today.

And so, we give thanKs for the opportunity to remember the spirit of Eureka, and for what we are about to receive. AMEN
